Director Martin Campbell has opened up about the disappointment surrounding Green Lantern, admitting he wasn’t the right fit for the project.

In a recent interview with Variety, he shared that his lack of connection to the superhero genre and the film’s weak antagonist contributed to its failure.

Campbell Admits He Wasn’t the Right Fit

Fourteen years after its release, Green Lantern director Martin Campbell acknowledges that the film’s failure largely stemmed from his own lack of passion for superhero movies.

“It didn’t do business, I think, for a number of reasons, but the reason I did it was simply I’d never done one before,” Campbell said. “I think quite honestly, if you’re going to do a superhero movie, you have to be in that world a little bit, and I wasn’t.”

A Villain That Didn’t Work

One of Campbell’s biggest criticisms of the film was its antagonist, Parallax, which he described as “just a cloud with a face on it.”

Despite following the comic’s characters closely, he admitted the story “was left wanting” and that budget constraints forced changes to the film’s ending.

Praise for Reynolds & Lively

Despite the film’s struggles, Campbell had nothing but praise for stars Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, calling them “wonderful to work with.” However, he believes the script and overall execution held the movie back.

Owning Up to the Film’s Failure

Campbell doesn’t shy away from accepting responsibility. “Listen, I’m not making any excuses,” he said. “When you direct and people don’t like it, you suck it up and say, ‘Well, I’m the director, so that’s my fault.’”

Though Green Lantern didn’t meet expectations, Campbell has since moved on, making it clear he has “none whatsoever” interest in directing another superhero film.
