A recent interview with Ryan Reynolds revealed that he wanted Nicolas Cage to reprise his role as the Ghost Rider in the third installment of Deadpool. He stated that he tried persuading Cage to play the character for a third time but it didn’t come to fruition.
No Spirit of Vengeance
Nicolas Cage has been a part of Marvel way before Ryan Reynolds. He played Johnny Blaze and his alter ego Ghost Rider in two films. The first came out in 2007 and garnered much praise from critics and fans alike but “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” failed to connect with the audience.
Although the character is from Marvel comics, it was Sony who had the movie rights and they didn’t like the performance of the sequel. As a result, we never saw another movie with Ghost Rider in it. Well, that could have changed as the Deadpool star wanted Cage to play the character for a third time. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen as Ryan couldn’t convince the “National Treasure” actor for a cameo.
No shortage of cameos
It would have been another fan service for sure but even without Cage, “Deadpool & Wolverine” had a lot to offer. We saw actors like Chris Evans, Jennifer Garner, and Wesley Snipes reprise their roles and the audience loved to see their favorite characters.
Ryan, however, delivered much more than expected. The fans just couldn’t hold it in when they saw Henry Cavill as Wolverine, Channing Tatum as Gambit, and none other than Blake Lively appearing (rightfully) as Lady Deadpool. Would Cage’s return be an overkill? Not necessarily, he would have been a great addition to the roster but alas!
