Actor George Clooney criticized the media for not properly covering Joe Biden’s declining mental sharpness. In an interview with The New York Times' Maureen Dowd, Clooney said, “the media, in many ways, dropped the ball.”

He recalled seeing Former President Biden at a fundraiser in June 2024 and noticing a clear decline. “I saw him for hours a year earlier at the Kennedy Center, and I saw someone much less sharp,” he said. Clooney noted that he has always liked Biden but felt the president was not fit to continue.

Biden’s Communication Struggles

Clooney blamed the Biden administration’s poor messaging for its struggles, especially on the economy.

"The Biden administration was terrible at explaining that we’re a world economy, where we were actually doing better than all the other G7 countries," he said.

Calls for Biden to Step Down

In July 2024, after Biden’s rough debate performance against President Donald Trump, Clooney publicly called for him to drop out of the race.

He revealed that he made this statement despite being urged not to, clarifying that former President Barack Obama was not behind his decision.

Clooney on Trump’s Influence

Clooney also criticized Trump, saying the former president disregards facts. "You take a narrative, you make it up, don’t worry about facts, don’t worry about repercussions," he said. He compared Trump’s leadership to “letting an infant walk across the 405 freeway in the middle of the afternoon.”

He also linked Trump’s rise to the reaction against Barack Obama’s presidency, saying, "The first Trump election was, I believe, a result of eight years of a Black president."

CBS News Settlement Controversy

Clooney weighed in on CBS News’ possible settlement with Trump over a "60 Minutes" interview with Kamala Harris. He warned that such a deal could weaken journalistic integrity.

He agreed with CNN’s Jake Tapper, who said the settlement would mean CBS is choosing to “acquiesce to power at the expense of truth.” Clooney called this “a chilling effect on the press.”

Clooney’s Broadway Debut

Apart from politics, Clooney is preparing for his Broadway debut in Good Night, and Good Luck.

He will play legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow, a role he believes is more relevant than ever in today’s media landscape.
