Cynthia Erivo is on a roll this year. After the immense success of Wicked followed by an Oscar nomination, the actress is now set to host Broadway’s biggest night, the 2025 Tony Awards.


78th Tony Awards

The American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League announced on Feb. 19 that the 2025 Tony Awards will take place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sunday, June 8. Replacing the last three season’s host Ariana DeBose, Cynthia Erivo expressed gratitude for the opportunity.

“I am so proud and excited to take on this glorious honor,” Erivo said in a statement. “I am looking forward to ushering the theater community at large through a night that celebrates the wonderful performances we have witnessed throughout the year. I hope I can rise to the occasion.”

Heather Hitchens and Jason Lala, president of the American Theatre Wing and Broadway League respectively also added in a statement. “Through performances on both stage and screen, Cynthia has extended the magic of the musical theatre to millions of new fans around the globe and that is exactly the mission of the Tony Awards.”


Former Tony Winner

Erivo herself is a former Tony winner who previously earned the best actress in a musical prize in 2016 for her turn in the Broadway revival of “The Color Purple.” The 38-year-old artist has also bagged an Emmy and a Grammy for her televised performance of “The Color Purple,” and the show’s cast recording respectfully. 

The actress is currently contending for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of “Elephaba” in Wicked.
