Disney’s upcoming live-action Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler, has faced criticism since its announcement. The backlash began with complaints about Zegler’s casting due to her Colombian heritage and escalated after she called the 1937 animated classic “dated.”

She also sparked controversy by criticizing Prince Charming’s role, saying he “literally stalks” Snow White. These comments led to heated discussions online, with some accusing her of disrespecting the original film.

Additionally, Disney’s decision to replace the seven dwarfs with a diverse group of characters called “magical creatures” sparked further backlash, with some arguing that the changes strayed too far from the original story.

Zegler’s Response

In a recent interview with Vogue Mexico, Zegler addressed the ongoing backlash, interpreting the criticism as a reflection of fans’ deep emotional connection to Snow White:

“I interpret people’s feelings about this film as passion, and what an honor to be a part of something that people feel so strongly about. We’re not always going to agree, but all we can do is our best.”

She also acknowledged concerns within the Latino community about her representing a Latina Snow White, recognizing the complexities of representation:

“The reality of being Latino in this industry is that we try to represent the entire diaspora. I know where I’ve been, and I carry it with me every day.”

Comparisons to The Little Mermaid

Zegler compared her experience to the backlash Halle Bailey faced for playing Ariel in The Little Mermaid:

“Now I see what a beautiful experience it was for Black girls to see Halle as Ariel.”

Bailey’s casting initially faced criticism but was later embraced by many fans, something Zegler hopes will happen with Snow White as well.

Disney’s Approach to the Remake

Despite the backlash, Zegler reassured audiences that Disney is carefully balancing nostalgia with a fresh perspective for today’s audiences:

“Disney has found a delicate equilibrium between the 1937 animated classic and presenting it to a new generation.”

With Snow White set for release on March 21, Zegler remains focused on the project, embracing both the excitement and criticism surrounding the remake.
