Former President Donald Trump highlighted his reliance on family and familial connections in an uncommon and well publicized move by appointing his daughters' fathers-in-law to some of his administration's most important positions. These nominations, which highlight Trump's family-first approach, ignited controversy and highlighted concerns about the intersection of personal and professional interests in the halls of power.
A Family-Centered Administration
Throughout his presidency, Donald Trump was known for his distinct style of government, which frequently blurred the borders between personal and professional responsibilities. Central to this plan was his family's conspicuous presence in the White House. Notably, Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, was named as a senior adviser to the president, putting him at the center of major policy choices despite his lack of formal political experience. It wasn't just Kushner who benefited from Trump's family-friendly appointments.
Trump's appointment of his daughters' fathers-in-law to key positions became a visible indication of his dependence on family to occupy important positions. While unique, these choices have given his government a more personal touch, eliciting both acclaim and controversy. Here is the full list of the people who joined his administration till now.
The Father-in-Law and his Role
Charles Michael Boulos, Trump's most renowned father-in-law, has been appointed to an important position. While he has extensive commercial experience, his selection sparked controversy due to their strong relationship with the Trump family. Boulos' commercial and finance acumen influenced Trump's foreign policy, particularly in places where he had acquired economic interests. This appointment added to the list of family members who, due to their relationship, were given special access to Trump's government.
Family Power: A Central Feature of Trump’s Presidency
Donald Trump has named billionaire Massad Boulos as his senior adviser on Arab and Middle Eastern matters, the second time in as many days that the president-elect has appointed a family member to a critical position.
Though Trump did not mention it in his announcement on Sunday, Boulous is Tiffany's father-in-law and has been highly involved in campaigning for Trump in Muslim American groups in battleground states. On Saturday, Trump appointed real estate developer Charles Kushner as the new US ambassador to France. Kushner is the father of Jared Kushner, who is married to Trump's daughter Ivanka and was pardoned by the president in 2020 after being convicted of federal crimes in 2005.
