Holiday Hit 'Red One' Breaks Prime Video Records With 50 Million Viewers

"Red One," the Christmas action-comedy starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Chris Evans, has reached a huge milestone by being the most-watched film debut on Amazon Prime Video, with 50 million viewers during its inaugural streaming week. This success follows a modest theatrical run that grossed roughly $165 million globally against a production budget of $200-250 million.

Theatrical Performance

Released in theaters on November 15, 2024, "Red One" had intense competition from other major releases, resulting in a box office performance that fell short of its significant budget. Despite this, the film managed to rank in the top 35 highest-grossing movies of the year. This followed the Christmas action flick, which grossed $7 million and finished third behind Moana 2, Wicked, and Gladiator 2. The day before Red One reaches Prime Video, the film officially crossed the $165 million barrier at the global box office, due to a $490,000 day on Monday, December 9, which saw the film slip behind Interstellar by $1 million.

Transition to Streaming Success

One day after its Prime Video launch, "Red One" has risen to the top of the Prime Video Top 10, surpassing "Secret Level" and "Cross" (as of this writing). Synopsis and Cast

"Red One," directed by Jake Kasdan, stars Dwayne Johnson as Callum Drift, the chief of security for Santa Claus, played by J.K. Simmons. The plot revolves around Drift teaming up with hacker Jack O'Malley, played by Chris Evans, to save Santa from a sinister evil threatening Christmas. Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, and Nick Kroll round out the ensemble group.
