On July 13th, former President Donald Trump survived a bold assassination attempt during a Republican rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania. The assailant, who was identified as Thomas Mathew Crooks, fired multiple shots, one of which pierced Trump’s upper right ear.
Trump immediately ducked and was surrounded by Secret Service agents, but what came after took the media by storm. In a defiant display, Trump rose to his feet despite bleeding; he was taken to the hospital and was later released in stable condition. The shooter was taken down. However, an audience member was killed, and two others were severely injured.
Immediate Response by Secret Services
As the shots rang out at the rally in Pennsylvania, Trump was hit and immediately ducked. The Secret Service agents acted spontaneously and precisely to shield and protect the former U.S. president. The shooter, positioned on a rooftop outside the venue, fired shots at Trump using a high-powered semi-automatic rifle.
The counter-snipers positioned by the Secret Service were pre-positioned to monitor any kind of threat lingering around the venue. As soon as the shots were fired, they quickly identified the shooter and completely neutralized him. Their rapid response prevented further escalation. However, a former fire chief was shot dead while he was trying to guard his family from the gunfire, and two other civilians were also hit but survived.
Trump’s Defiant Stand
After being struck in the upper right ear by one of the bullets, Donald Trump showcased impressive defiance. He weaved and was quickly surrounded by Secret Service agents in no time. Soon enough, he rose to his feet, bleeding through his ear, but held a steady composure and appeared to say, “Fight! Fight! Fight!”. This moment was captured by the media, portraying Trump’s resilience and determination. Within an hour, the news took the world by storm.
These actions by the former president were not limited to his personal fortitude but also served as a reassurance to his supporters. Despite being hit, he continued to turn towards the crowd and raise his fist before he was rushed to the nearby hospital. A couple of hours later, he was released in stable condition and sent back to New Jersey.
The Shooter And His Motive
The 20-year-old Pennsylvania man who tried to assassinate Trump at his rally had a complex portrait of being “nice” and a “loner”. On Sunday morning, as the FBI inspected the man's background, reports surged, identifying the man as Thomas Mathew Crooks, who lived in Bethel Park.
As of now, the FBI could not unveil the motive of Crooks. They have been working tirelessly to find what led that 20-year-old man to a barbaric and suicidal move. Determining the reason remains the highest priority, as the bureau has also been considering it a “potential domestic terrorism act," stated Robert Wells, the FBI assistant director of the Counterterrorism Division.
As more information on this scenario surfaces, we will keep you updated.
