Zakir Hussain, the great Indian tabla player known for his significant influence on classical music, died on December 15, 2024, at the age of 73. His family verified that he died in a San Francisco hospital from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a persistent lung illness.


Early Life and Musical Pedigree

Zakir Hussain, the eldest son of renowned tabla master Ustad Alla Rakha, was born in Mumbai on March 9, 1951. Hussain began playing the tabla at the age of seven, under the guidance of his father, and swiftly rose to the status of child prodigy. He began performing professionally at the age of 12 and shared stages with India's classical music legends during his adolescence.


Global Collaborations and Fusion Endeavors

Throughout his six-decade career, Hussain played a key role in bringing the tabla to international audiences. He worked with a wide range of performers, including George Harrison, Yo-Yo Ma, and jazz guitarist John McLaughlin, with whom he formed the fusion band "Shakti" in 1973. This ensemble's flawless blend of Indian classical music and jazz elements captivated audiences worldwide.


Accolades and Honors

Hussain's outstanding talent earned him several accolades. He garnered seven Grammy nominations and won four, including an unprecedented three trophies in 2024. His efforts were acknowledged with India's highest accolades, including the Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2002, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2023. 


Tributes and Legacy

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Hussain, calling him a "true genius who revolutionized the world of Indian classical music" and an "icon of cultural unity." Hussain's unrivaled rhythm and dedication to his art have made an unforgettable impression on the global music scene.
