Developers in Sydney, Australia, have found themselves at the center of a controversy after the accidental demolition of the childhood home of Angus and Malcolm Young, the founding members of the legendary rock band AC/DC.

The house at 4 Burleigh Street, Burwood, was not just a family residence but a historic site where the band was envisioned in 1973. Despite being listed on the National Trust Register of Historic Houses since 2013, the house was torn down to make way for a luxury residential development in the area.

The developers, Burwood Square Pty Ltd, have issued a public apology, calling the demolition an "oversight." They have cited ignorance about the property’s historical significance and have blamed the lack of disclosure from the long-term previous owner of the house.

Fans Mourn the Loss of AC/DC’s Origins

The reaction from AC/DC fans and the music community has been one of outrage and sorrow. Many took to social media to share their disbelief, with fans calling the demolition an utter disgrace. For many, the house was not just a physical structure but a cultural landmark, a shrine to the beginnings of one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

In an attempt to address the backlash, the developers have promised to salvage materials from the site to create a new commemorative "special space," such as a bar or cafe dedicated to the band’s legacy. However, critics argue that such efforts cannot replace the original home sense, which could have been preserved as a museum or memorial honoring AC/DC's origins.

Local Council's Role and Future Steps

While the local Burwood Council was not involved in the demolition approval, they had previously recognized the Young family’s contributions to the area by commissioning a mural of Angus and Malcolm nearby. Now, with the home gone, the council is exploring other ways to honor the band’s history to calm down fans' fury.

This incident has highlighted the urgency of safeguarding cultural and historical landmarks. For many, the demolition of AC/DC’s childhood home serves as a sobering reminder of how easily vital pieces of cultural heritage can be lost without proper recognition and protection.
