Lucy Liu has openly described confronting Bill Murray during the making of Charlie's Angels in 2000, citing what she calls "inexcusable and unacceptable" words directed at her. Lucy Liu made headlines in 2021 when she appeared on an edition of the Los Angeles Times' "Asian Enough" podcast and said that Bill Murray made "unacceptable" and "inexcusable" remarks to her on the "Charlie's Angels" set. Four years later, The Guardian asked the actor why she chose to speak out about Murray's behavior on set.
The On-Set Incident
During rehearsals, Bill Murray reportedly began to trash Liu, implying that she couldn't act. Recognizing the inappropriateness of his remarks, Liu challenged him immediately, saying, "I do not accept that kind of behavior from you." This incident resulted in a one-on-one conversation between the two, in which Liu stood her position.
During her 2021 interview on the "Asian Enough" podcast, Liu said that Murray insulted her on set one day. The video of that interview became viral on the internet.
Shortly after the podcast interview went viral, Barrymore appeared on her daytime talk show to applaud Liu for speaking up. She explained that "comedians can be a little dark sometimes" and that Murray arrived to the "Charlie' Angels" set “in a bad mood.”
Support from Co-Stars
Drew Barrymore, the film's co-star and producer, applauded Liu's actions, praising her for defending herself and emphasizing the cast's unity. Barrymore went on: “Lucy stood up for herself, and that was the great thing that came out of an unfortunate circumstance.”
