Early Life

Savage has been in the music industry for around a decade now but his childhood gripped by poverty, crime, and violence made his musical journey more challenging than others.

  • Started rapping at the age of 21 in 2013 following the death of his close friend Johnny during a shootout.
  • Released his first single “I Can't Get Enough” in March 2013 from the money given by his dead friend's uncle.
  • Released his debut mixtape “The Slaughter Tape” in May 2015 which made him what Interview Magazine called an "underground hero in Atlanta".
  • His first collaborative EP “Free Guwop” was released with Sonny Digital back in July 2015. The EP was a tribute to fellow rapper and Savage’s influence Gucci Mane.
  • In December 2015, “Slaughter King” was released which was his second mixtape.
  • He was named one of the "Freshman Class" of 2016 by XXL in July.

Family

Born in a poor family surrounded by gang violence on top of that, migrating to the U.S. at a very young age made his childhood harsh and filled with dangerous situations. All of those experiences made 21 Savage realize the true meaning of fatherhood.
You work to receive, to gain all the success and all the good sh*t, but it's like I feel like the best parents in my opinion is parents that don't got it all. I feel like broke parents are better than rich parents, in my opinion.” - 21 Savage during an interview on Shannon Sharpe's Club Shay Shay.

  • Born on October 22, 1992, at Newham University Hospital in Plaistow, London, to British parents Heather Carmillia Joseph and Kevin Cornelius Emmons. His mother was a housewife and his father worked for Westminster City Council.
  • He moved to Atlanta, Georgia, U.S. with his mother in 1999 after his parents separated.
  • Abraham returned to the U.K. in 2005 for his uncle's funeral and went back after a month on an H-4 visa that expired in July 2006.
  • His mother started a relationship with Dr. Amsu Anpu, an endocrinologist.
  • He was placed on probation for gun possession in 7th grade.
  • A year later, Abraham-Joseph was banned permanently from every school in the DeKalb County School District following a probation violation and was sent to a juvenile detention center.
  • He entered high school but dropped out in his freshman year.
  • Joined a local street gang affiliated with the wider Bloods gang and became a full-time drug dealer selling cannabis.
  • He was arrested after contraband was found in a car he was driving.
  • His "right-hand man" Larry, was killed in a shootout back in 2011.
  • On his 21st birthday, the rapper was shot six times by rival gang members, and his best friend Johnny was killed.
