Early Life

Buffett's early life was quite different from his current stature. He had quite humble beginnings.

  • Born in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 11, Buffett made his first stock purchase. He bought three shares of Cities Service Preferred at $38 per share.
  • Despite an initial drop in the stock price to $27, Buffett held his nerve and sold the shares at $40, making a small profit.
  • He attended Rose Hill Elementary School and later Alice Deal Junior High School. Even at a young age, Buffett was drawn to books on business and investing.
  • He still lives in the same Omaha house he bought in 1958 for $31,500. Buffett is known for his old-fashioned habits.
  • He doesn't use a computer at his desk and still uses a flip phone, avoiding the latest tech gadgets despite being one of the richest people in the world.

While on first glance, Warren's family life seems quite normal, it was anything but.

  • Warren Buffett's family includes his three children: Susan Alice Buffett, Howard Graham Buffett, and Peter Andrew Buffett, whom he had with his first wife, Susan Thompson.
  • Susan Thompson Buffett, an activist and philanthropist, was married to Warren from 1952 until her death in 2004.
  • He married Astrid Menks, now  Astrid Buffet, in 2006.
  • Warren, Susan, and Astrid were good friends, and believed to be in an open marriage. The trio was known to send out Christmas cards together.
  • “Susie put me together, and Astrid keeps me together.” - Warren’s words on both his wives.
  • Susan Alice Buffett, the eldest, is a philanthropist and chair of the Sherwood Foundation.
  • Howard Buffett, the second child, is an environmentalist, farmer, and philanthropist, serving on the boards of Berkshire Hathaway and the Buffett Foundation.
