NFL stars Myles Garrett and Josh Allen have secured groundbreaking contract extensions, reshaping the league’s financial landscape. Garrett, the Cleveland Browns’ dominant defensive end, agreed to a four-year extension averaging $40 million per year, with $123.5 million guaranteed.
Meanwhile, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen signed a six-year, $330 million deal, including an unprecedented $250 million guaranteed, the largest guaranteed sum in league history.
Myles Garrett Becomes Highest-Paid Non-QB
The Browns announced Garrett’s extension, which runs through the 2030 season, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. The deal includes a no-trade clause, reaffirming Garrett’s commitment to Cleveland despite a rocky offseason.
Garrett had initially requested a trade on February 3, expressing frustration over another rebuild following the Browns’ 3-14 season. “My goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton, it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl,” Garrett said in a statement. However, after weeks of negotiations between his agent, Nicole Lynn, and Browns general manager Andrew Berry, an agreement was reached.
Browns owner Jimmy Haslam initially refused Garrett’s request for a meeting regarding the trade demand, instead directing him to Berry. Eventually, the two sides found common ground, securing Garrett’s future with the franchise.
Browns owner Jimmy Haslam initially refused Garrett’s request for a meeting regarding the trade demand, instead directing him to Berry. After weeks of negotiations, the two sides found common ground, securing Garrett’s future with the franchise. While he ultimately stayed in Cleveland, other star athletes haven’t been as fortunate—Jimmy Butler, for example, was traded after a tumultuous season with the Heat."
The extension surpasses the recent contract signed by Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby, who inked a three-year, $106.5 million deal just days prior. Garrett’s contract cements his place as the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.
Garrett’s Career and Impact
A four-time All-Pro and 2023 Defensive Player of the Year, Garrett has been a dominant force since being drafted first overall by Cleveland in 2017.
His 102.5 career sacks rank second in the league during that span, trailing only Pittsburgh Steelers star T.J. Watt (108). In 2024, he recorded 14 sacks, the second-most in the NFL.
Josh Allen’s Record-Breaking Extension
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen also made history with his six-year, $330 million contract extension, which includes an NFL-record $250 million in guaranteed money.
The deal, which keeps him under contract through 2030, makes Allen the second-highest-paid quarterback in terms of annual salary ($55 million)—even surpassing Patrick Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl champion, and trailing only the Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott ($60 million).
"Josh Allen’s leadership, his consistent leadership, was the biggest reason why we did what we did this season,” Bills head coach Sean McDermott said. “He continues to do that, and we’re going to win a lot of football games.”
Allen’s Dominance and MVP Season
Allen, the reigning NFL MVP, had an incredible 2024 season, leading the Bills to their fifth consecutive AFC East title. He became the first player in league history to record at least 25 passing touchdowns, 10 rushing touchdowns, and fewer than 10 interceptions in a single season. He finished the year with 28 touchdown passes, 12 rushing touchdowns, and only six interceptions.
His ability to protect the football was a major point of emphasis entering 2024, and he delivered, recording a career-low eight turnovers. Since entering the league in 2018, Allen has accounted for 260 total touchdowns (passing and rushing), the most by any player in their first seven seasons.
Bills general manager Brandon Beane praised Allen’s impact on the team:
I love Josh and I’m so proud of what he’s done. We have a great relationship, and when the time came, we knew he deserved this deal.
What’s Next for the Browns and Bills?
With Garrett locked in, the Browns are looking to rebound from their disappointing 3-14 season. The team holds the No. 2 pick in the upcoming draft, with uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position.
For Buffalo, the extension solidifies Allen as the franchise’s centerpiece for years to come. The Bills have also been busy retaining key players, signing defensive end Greg Rousseau (four years, $80 million), linebacker Terrel Bernard (four years, $50 million), and receiver Khalil Shakir (four years, $53 million).
As both Garrett and Allen prepare for the 2025 season, their new contracts signal the importance of securing elite talent in the ever-evolving NFL landscape.
