The Tokyo edition of WTA 2024 gained another edge when Katie Boulter defeated Kyoka Okamura today. With her current ranking of 33 in the world, she has projected a significantly higher percentage of wins as compared to her rival Kyoka Okamura listed at 271. Boulter and her progress in the Tokyo WTA has been nothing less than spectacular by gaining the upper hand in her qualifying first match against Priscilla Hon. Combining her fierce gameplay and strong serves, she effectively broke points while being calm under pressure.
Katie Boulter created a scorecard of 6-1 6-2 within 69 minutes and ended up creating a last-minute meet with unseeded Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu. While opening the game, Boulter broke through Okamura’s defense and made an impact on serve during the dominant opening set. This led Boulter to benefit from three advantage points that helped her claim the fifth and finally build a 4-1 advantage.
Speaking on her performance, Boulter said that she felt like she was playing some good tennis while also attempting to get through the matches. Katie is looking to wrap up a season where she wins two WTA titles and has been playing since Eastbourne in June. The strategic and precise win led Kyoka Okamura to play opposite the wildcard entry from Canada, Bianca Andreescu.
Despite being plagued by injuries, Bianca Andreescu has been steadily gaining her place since her first match at the 2019 US Open. Boulter also remarked that Bianca is an incredible player who has won a Grand Slam through her great tennis skills. During the tennis match, it was observed that Katie Boulter had more consistency and power playing from the back of the court and showing a peek into her craft. This is what became too much for Okamura to handle thus leading to her defeat.
