The country singer and songwriter Jelly Roll is set to make history on the 23rd season of ABC’s American Idol. The Grammy-nominated artist has signed on as the show’s first-ever “Artist in Residence,” a new role that will see him mentoring contestants throughout the season.
A New Role on American Idol
Jelly Roll made a memorable appearance on American Idol last season as a guest mentor and performer during the show's visit to Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawai’i. Now, he returns as a permanent mentor, starting from Hollywood Week and guiding contestants throughout the season, offering advice to help them on their journey.
In a fun announcement video with American Idol host Ryan Seacrest, Jelly Roll shared his excitement, calling himself American Idol’s “Artist in Residence.” When Seacrest asked how he felt about his new role, Jelly replied, “It feels good.”
Seacrest laughed and said, “It feels like you are shaping America’s future.” Jelly then playfully picked Seacrest up, throwing him over his shoulder before giving him a big hug.
Major Changes This Season
Jelly Roll's addition comes as American Idol makes a big change to its judging panel, the first in seven years. Carrie Underwood, one of Idol’s most successful winners, will replace Katy Perry, joining Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and longtime host Ryan Seacrest for the 2025 season. Disney TV president Craig Erwich called Underwood’s return a “full-circle moment” from contestant to superstar judge."
This upcoming season marks 20 years since Carrie won America's hearts on Idol and launched her successful multi-Grammy Award-winning career. As a former Idol and dynamic musical force, she brings a remarkably unique perspective to one of the most popular shows of television," he said in a press release.
When Does American Idol Return?
Season 23 of American Idol premieres Sunday, March 9, at 8 p.m. on ABC with episodes streaming the next day on Hulu. Fans can catch an early preview in a special episode airing after the Oscars on March 2.
With Jelly Roll bringing his expertise and energy to the Idol stage, this season promises to be one of the most exciting yet.
