Eddie Levert, the iconic lead singer of The O’Jays, had one of his dream experiences recently that he will always cherish. The 82-year-old legend’s lifelong wish of meeting Michelle Obama came true when she made a rare appearance at the Annual Martha’s Vineyard Community and Purpose Series. The winner of the Legacy Award, Levert said he only wished to meet the first Black First Lady. To his surprise, he found Michelle Obama there ready to make that dream come through.
Honoring a legend
The event, hosted by Spike Lee and his wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, honored Levert’s legacy, particularly his experiences touring during segregation. After sharing personal stories from his career, Spike Lee took Levert off stage, where he found Michelle Obama waiting to greet him. Levert broke down in tears during the heartfelt meeting as Obama sincerely thanked him for his efforts to civil rights and music.
A special connection
The two chatted for several minutes; Obama even joined Levert’s wife and daughter for a photo. The next day, Levert could not stop discussing this meeting and even mentioned during a luncheon that he had a thing for Michelle Obama, calling her his “girl crush." The event was memorable for the singer and everyone who saw their sincere affection towards each other.
A community celebration
Obama’s appearance at the historic Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs didn’t go unnoticed by locals, who appreciated her participation in the free community event. Her presence at this cross-generational gathering highlighted the importance of celebrating together, leaving a lasting impact on all who were present.
