Monday was a dramatic rollercoaster for social media platform X (formerly Twitter) as massive outages left millions strung up.

After the attack, billionaire Elon Musk accused Ukraine, alleging IP addresses from the country were involved in a ‘massive cyber attack’ to disable his platform. Meanwhile, a pro-Palestinian hacking group, “Dark Storm Team,” has claimed responsibility for the cyber attack.

Outage Details and Initial Reactions

The problem first appeared to affect users starting around 5:30 AM ET, with the service down intermittently to an increasingly frustrated crowd trying to use the platform. The Downdetector data showed that almost 40,000 users were unable to load X.

According to Musk, “This was one that they put a lot of resources into, but we get attacked every day. The people involved are either a large, coordinated group or a country.

However, cyber security experts point out that distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks can be carried out in a network of compromised devices scattered across different countries and it can be very difficult to ascribe blame to Ukraine in particular.

While the scepticism from the technical corner makes it difficult to find any kind of significant political or geopolitical impact of cyber warfare, the incident has brought back discussions around the security of the major platforms.

Dark Storm Team Steps Forward

Dark Storm Team claimed responsibility for the attack shortly after Musk’s claims. The group, which has acted in the past to target organizations in Israel, NATO, and parts of Europe, said on Twitter that they were responsible for taking X offline.

The attack was meant as a demonstration that the group could impact digital infrastructure and that it had no political ties to Ukraine, the group’s messaging said. But analysts add that crediting Dark Storm Team has complicated the story, and DDoS attribution is notoriously tough.

A cyber security expert familiar with the incident said: ‘The attackers usually create a chain of countries where they route their traffic to hide their origins.’ It is hard to conclude that the disruption was a state-sponsored operation or even a hacker stunt for attention.

Musk’s Accusations Amid Mounting Challenges

Musk is speaking out not only about his recent controversies but also about the X outage. Also on the day that X was crippled by outages, Tesla’s stock crashed in what turned out to be its worst drop in the last five years. Shares in Tesla tumbled by 15 per cent on Monday, wiping $120 billion out of the market's value and causing losses for Musk's wealth in the billions.

At the same time, investors worry about Musk's style as a top manager and his engagement in DOGE, the authority for improving the government's work.

Musk has had high-profile political involvement (including inflammatory statements regarding Ukraine), and critics say that he may be derailing his business ventures. On the day of an enormous cyber attack on X and the fall in Tesla shares, scrutiny of Musk's stewardship and fears for the future of his empire have heightened.

Broader Implications of Cyber Security on Geopolitics

This incident marks the growing reach of the digital platforms around the world being targeted by the same coordinated cyber attack. Such attacks could become more frequent as tensions grow between, for instance, state and non-state actors, say experts.

The only question remaining is if the attack on X was part of a larger cyber war strategy or just a hackers' group making a statement being opportunistic. They are equally worrying geopolitically.

Musk’s claim that the attack was Ukraine’s fuels an existing flame of war about the role of digital platforms in modern conflict. It is also a worrying reminder that governments and cyber security firms are now scrambling to shore up their defences that lack the wherewithal to battle against digital infrastructure, which can be an important battleground in today’s interconnected world.
