Ed Sheeran’s Street Performance Shut Down by Indian Police

Ed Sheeran, currently touring India as part of his Mathematics Tour, took to the streets of Bengaluru on February 9 for an intimate performance. Fans gathered around as the British singer-songwriter played an acoustic version of Shape of You, creating a rare, up-close moment between the artist and his audience. However, the excitement was short-lived as local police soon intervened, abruptly ending the performance.

Police Stop Sheeran’s Performance

Ed Sheeran’s impromptu street performance in Bengaluru on February 9 was abruptly shut down by local police. The English singer was performing his hit song Shape of You when officers unplugged his microphone.

 “We have permission to be here, but this policeman is shutting it down,” Sheeran told the crowd before waving goodbye.

Conflicting Claims About Permission

Authorities in Bengaluru stated that Sheeran did not have the required permits to perform on public roads. "No one can perform on footpaths or roads as it causes inconvenience to others," police officials explained. However, Sheeran countered this claim on Instagram, insisting that his team had arranged permission in advance.

However, Sheeran disputed this on Instagram, stating that his team had arranged permission beforehand.

“We had permission to busk, btw,” Sheeran wrote. “This was planned, not just us randomly turning up. All good though—see ya at the show tonight x.”

Fans React to Surprise Show

Despite the abrupt shutdown, fans were thrilled to catch Sheeran performing in an informal setting. One user on X shared, “Went for a casual walk on Church Street and stumbled upon Ed Sheeran performing live. What a city!”
Sheeran later performed his scheduled concert at NICE Grounds in Bengaluru that same evening. His India tour continues with shows in Shillong on February 12 and Delhi on February 15 before heading to China.
