California’s latest wildfires have left a trail of destruction across Los Angeles County, with multiple blazes, Palisades, Eaton, Hurst, Lidia, and Kenneth, fueled by drought conditions and fierce Santa Ana winds. As the flames ravage iconic neighborhoods, a number of high-profile celebrities have voiced anger and frustration at Governor Gavin Newsom’s handling of the crisis.
Homes lost, tensions rise
Several stars, including James Woods, Patricia Heaton, and Jillian Michaels, have lost homes or evacuated family members in the face of these relentless infernos. Their public statements seethe with outrage over what they perceive as inept leadership.
Many have taken to social media, highlighting everything from empty fire hydrants to un-cleared brush, insisting these conditions “never should have happened” in a state that pays some of the highest taxes in the nation.
Celebrity outrage
President-elect Donald Trump branded the situation “apocalyptic,” urging Newsom to resign over alleged failures to manage water resources. Actor James Woods, who lost his home, openly accused Newsom and Bass of ignoring “the first thing about fire management.” Mel Gibson lampooned the governor’s priorities, joking that “all our tax dollars” seemingly went to “hair gel” instead of critical wildfire prevention.
Meanwhile, Khloe Kardashian and Patricia Heaton lambasted Los Angeles leadership for underfunding firefighting efforts, and fitness expert Jillian Michaels critiqued the National Guard’s late mobilization. Actor Michael Rapaport, never one to mince words, urged Newsom to stop worrying about “Trump-proofing” California and focus on “fire-proofing” instead.
Leadership under fire
Caught in the crossfire, Governor Newsom’s communications director dismissed rumors of a “water restoration declaration” as baseless, insisting the administration has done everything within its power to combat the blazes. Yet the onslaught of celebrity criticism has thrust not only Newsom but also Mayor Bass into the hot seat.
Although Bass denies claims of firefighting budget cuts, pointing instead to funding increases, residents and high-profile critics alike question whether those funds have been directed effectively. The debate speaks to a deeper issue of preparedness: did leaders invest adequately in year-round prevention efforts, or did they wait until the crisis was already unfolding?
What’s next for California?
With damages estimated at over 150 billion and a rising death toll, the call for accountability is deafening. From protests demanding recalls to promises of new investigations, the path to recovery remains uncertain. Yet one thing is clear: as the embers slowly die down, the political firestorm burning around Governor Newsom and other California leaders is just heating up.
