Professor Brian Cox thinks that humanity's future is beyond Earth. Even though Cox hasn't bought his spacecraft ticket yet, he is positive about humanity's prospects in space. In his ideal scenario, everyone will be able to travel to space thanks to developments made by businesses like Elon Musk's SpaceX.
According to Cox, expanding into space could ensure the survival of our civilization and allow us to harness untapped resources like asteroids.
“Civilization's thirst and requirement for more resources”, he says.
Commercial space ventures and collaboration
Commercial space travel is no longer a dream. He thinks that collaboration between private companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin and government agencies like NASA is crucial for reliable and affordable access to space. The recent success of Jared Isaacman’s mission, where he became the first private astronaut to walk in space, marks a turning point.
“...our expansion beyond this planet becomes an obligation.”
Cox is also optimistic that we may soon discover circumstances favorable to life elsewhere in our solar system with projects like NASA's Europa Clipper, which is designed to explore Jupiter's moon. Even though he only foresees primitive life forms on moons similar to Europa, the voyage is essential to our comprehension of the cosmos.
Debunking the flat Earth myth
Cox is optimistic about the future of humans in space, but he is not amused by speculations of a Flat Earth. His strong denial of the idea is supported by centuries' worth of scientific data, ranging from contemporary satellite photography to ancient Greek measurements of Earth's radius. For Cox, the belief that Earth is flat is not only baseless but completely nonsensical.
He confidently dismisses these views, pointing out that observable scientific facts contradict such outdated notions. Beyond simply the universe, Cox is passionate about science and strives to dispel myths and encourage people to believe in data.
