In his recent conversation with Rio Ferdinand on the Presents podcast, the 39-year-old football icon shared his thoughts on United's current struggles, calling for a complete overhaul to bring the club back to its former glory. “The coach must believe in winning,” he emphasized, criticizing Erik ten Hag’s public doubts about competing for the Premier League and Champions League titles.

The need for a change

Man United has won trophies,  like the Carabao Cup in 2023 and FA Cup in 2024, in the last two years. However, Erik ten Hag still faces pressure following last season’s eighth-place Premier League finish. Despite this, his contract has been renewed until 2026 by the new co-owners, which include Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
The former United player Ronaldo doesn't seem to be happy as he critiqued manager Erik ten Hag for not projecting the right attitude. "As Manchester United's coach, you can’t say you’re not going to fight for the league or Champions League," he emphasized.

Rebuild everything

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner believes that Manchester United has lost its competitive spirit, emphasizing the need for a complete overhaul. He stated, “Manchester needs to rebuild everything... You cannot say you’re not going to fight for the league or Champions League. You have to try.”
Even after his turbulent departure in 2022 due to a controversial interview, Ronaldo insists that the team needs to make major adjustments. He expressed frustration with the lack of ambition under manager Erik ten Hag and criticized the Glazers for their indifference towards the club.

A long-term solution

Zinedine Zidane's name keeps coming up when people talk about Manchester United's future during this crazy time under Erik ten Hag. He led Real Madrid to a Champions League three-peat and cemented his place as one of the top tacticians in football history.
His potential arrival could mark a turning point for the club, provided the board is willing to meet his conditions. Ratcliffe’s ambition to restore United as a world-class football club aligns with Zidane’s demands for quality and vision. While language barriers have been a concern, Zidane’s leadership could overcome such hurdles.
As the pressure on Ten Hag builds, the prospect of Zidane taking charge seems more realistic than ever. Could this be the turning point for Manchester United? Time will tell.
