In a remarkable move, Khaby Lame, the Senegalese-Italian TikTok star famed for his silent yet emotive films, has been chosen a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. The news was made during a ceremony in Dakar, Senegal, on January 31, 2025.


A Journey from Factory Worker to Global Influencer

Khaby Lame was born in Senegal on March 9, 2000, and relocated to Italy at the age of one. Raised in a public housing complex near Turin, he had early hurdles such as financial anxieties and difficulty discovering his vocation in school. Lame lost his work as a machine operator at a factory near Turin in March 2020, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This setback inspired him to experiment with content production on TikTok, where he became famous for his funny, wordless replies to too intricate "life hacks." His relatable and approachable style resonated globally, leading him to become TikTok's most-followed user, with more than 162 million followers as of January 2025.


Commitment to Children's Rights

Lame is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador who works to raise global awareness of children's rights. His priorities include education and training, empowering girls, protecting them from assault and abuse, and providing access to health, nutrition, and a clean environment. When asked about his appointment, Lame responded: "From my own experience as a child fearing poverty, struggling to find my passion at school, and losing my job during the COVID-19 pandemic, to finding my place and calling in the world, I know that all children.


Global Impact and Recognition

Lame's rise to stardom has been accompanied by numerous accolades. In 2022, he appeared on Fortune's 40 Under 40 and Forbes' 30 Under 30 lists. In 2024, Forbes named him one of the top ten content developers. His international appeal, which transcends linguistic borders, has made him an effective advocate for positive change.
