President Donald Trump took the stage Tuesday night before a joint session of Congress to detail what his administration will pursue during the coming year. It was a relatively lengthy speech of over an hour covering many issues, from economic policy to national security, and both applauded and booed by lawmakers.

Trade Wars and Tariff Tensions

The Trade policy was another cornerstone of Trump’s address. The President indicated that he is willing to up the trade ante by signalling that he is ready to escalate trade squabbles. He quipped,

You've heard of the European Union, China, Brazil, India, Mexico, and Canada. On average, the European Union, China, Brazil, India, Mexico and Canada have a lower amount of tariffs than you.

Besides imposing more tariffs, particularly targeted at agricultural products, he warned of unfair trade practices. The rhetoric bolsters his administration’s use of tariffs as a tool to shore up trade relations between the US and the world, an effort that is likely to have lasting negative impacts for American farmers who are also targeted for retaliatory actions by countries affected.

A Return to Expansionist Ambitions

One of the most controversial and salient parts of President Trump’s speech, perhaps, was a reiteration of his time-honored wish to seize Greenland.

Trump maintained that the security of Greenland is of paramount importance and that he is working with everyone involved to secure the land. It echoes back to the era of manifest destiny and has attracted hostile criticism from both domestic and foreign critics.

Still a self-governing territory under Danish control, Greenland has been repeatedly declared “not for sale” by the country's people and its officials. For example, Trump’s promise to ‘get it one way or another’ has reignited debates about America’s imperialist policies and what kind of foreign policy the United States can continue to pursue.

Cultural Shifts and the Battle against “Wokeness”

In a segment that has been rousing a firestorm of conversation, the President launched at what he referred to as “wokeness”—a cultural adaptive he asserts bruises fundamental American values. Trump spoke against the influence of political correctness in government as well as the private sector, saying that it stifles free speech and forces a divisive social agenda upon the nation.

He compared the situation to other cultural controversies and mentioned that entrepreneurs and figures in entertainment and business like Elon Musk have pushed against these norms, sparking further debates on national identity. He proclaimed:

We need to be up for our basic values and reject the hyper politicization of a cultural revolution.

This statement, like many in his address, has met fierce support and ferocious criticism from the different echelons of the political spectrum.

The Controversial DOGE Initiative

However, one of the seminal moments of the address was when the President announced a brand new governmental unit called the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. "I created the brand new Department of Government Efficiency, do you know the DOGE, perhaps you’ve heard of it," Trump added, before he showered praise on tech entrepreneur Elon Musk.

However, the White House later specified that Musk does not actually head up the DOGE office; rather, he is a “Senior Advisor,” to the office, which has triggered many questions about possible conflicts of interest.

Musk’s ties to Tesla and SpaceX, which have received large federal contracts, have also been criticized for possibly complicating the agency’s ability to check its function.

Big Tech’s Shifting Fortunes

President Trump, surprising in his public willingness to defend tech companies, offered a rare public nod of approval. He singled out Apple CEO Tim Cook for investments made by industry giants like Apple, Oracle, and Softbank in the U.S.

Trump recalled a statement that reflected the newfound ecumenical spirit between the administration and Silicon Valley: 'Tim Cook called me, he said, 'I cannot spend it fast enough.”

It represents a strategic change from previous criticisms of those too big to fail in the tech world, and perhaps a sign the company is looking to curry favour with Washington policymakers even if it means the immigration visa program. But making money in current tech headwinds, even with all those competitors, might become exceedingly tough given the rise of global dynamics.

Congressional Drama and Public Reaction

However, the address was not free of disruption. During the nearly two-hour’s speech, several Democratic lawmakers protested or heckled throughout.

Democratic Rep. Al Green of Texas was forcibly removed after vociferously objecting to Trump’s remarks on Medicaid, and other Democrats held up signs, including one reading “This is not normal” and another saying “Musk Steals” in protest of various policy proposals. Deeply partisan, this country’s politics continue to be defined by such public displays of dissent.
