President-elect Donald Trump has adopted a more assertive tone as the Inauguration Ceremony draws closer. His latest comments on Canada, Panama, and Greenland have sparked controversy in world politics, though they come as no surprise. Trump’s recent Christmas post on Truth Social, the platform he owns, raises concerns for Justin Trudeau and Panama Canal authorities.
Donald Trump Threatens Panama Canal
In his lengthy Christmas post, the 2024 Time "Person of the Year," Donald Trump, first aimed at the Panama Canal, accusing China of illegally controlling the facility. The post included a sharp critique of Panama Canal operators and a pointed reminder of U.S. contributions and sacrifices in building the iconic canal. Take a look at what Trump said:
“Merry Christmas to all, including the wonderful soldiers of China, who are illegally operating the Panama Canal, always ensuring the United States funds its repairs but has no say in its operations.”
Trump also referenced the U.S. loss of 38,000 workers during the canal’s construction over 110 years ago, a sacrifice he said should never be forgotten.
Trump's proposal to Justin Trudeau
Trump didn’t stop there. By mocking Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, he put forth a bold and controversial proposition and that’s making Canada the 51st state of the United States. Trump says:
“To Governor Justin Trudeau of Canada: if Canada became our 51st State, their taxes would be slashed, businesses would thrive, and they’d have unmatched military protection.”
Trump also criticized Trudeau for Canada’s high taxes, claiming the move would bring significant financial benefits to Canadian citizens and businesses.
US 47th President assures Greenland of Security
In addition, Trump addressed Greenland, emphasizing its importance to U.S. national security. He assured Greenlanders of America’s protection, pointing out their dependence on the U.S. for safety and stability. Trump’s statement underscored the strategic role Greenland plays in American defense plans.
Kevin Marino, the new addition to the Trump administration
Although Christmas has passed, Trump, as we know, has continued to share his plans for his upcoming presidency. In a separate announcement, he revealed his pick for the United States Ambassador to Panama, Kevin Marino Cabrera. While Kevin, Trump criticized Panama for exploiting the U.S. through the Panama Canal, claiming they profit unfairly from American investments. He stated that Cabrera’s role would be crucial in addressing these issues.
As Trump prepares to take office as the 47th president of the United States, his posts on Truth Social continue to draw widespread attention, sparking debates about the political and diplomatic consequences of his bold remarks.
