Robert Downey Jr's Car Collection Shrinks After Six Giveaways From Downey's Dream Cars

Robert Downey Jr. is a highly acclaimed American actor known for his versatility and charismatic performances. Our beloved ‘Iron Man’ has not only established himself as one of the finest actors in Hollywood but has also taken the Automotive industry by storm with his new show ‘Downey’s Dream Cars' where RDJ and his restoration crew collect classic and vintage models and restore them with ev technology given the global warming and climate change being a major concern. However, 'Tony Stark' himself loves cars and features a fleet of exquisite cars in his garage which showcases his love and appreciation for cars in general. Let's dive deep into his multi-million dollar car collection. 

19. Porsche 993

Robert Downey Jr. owns one of the rare Porsche 993s, the last generation of the air-cooled Porsche 911 models, making it particularly significant in Porsche's history. The 993 is known for its classic and timeless design, characterized by its smooth lines, muscular rear fenders, and an instantly recognizable silhouette. The Porsche 993 was gifted to Robert by his wife. So apart from that and the power that it packs the 993 also comes with numerous features and amenities such as automatic climate control, Alpine stereo speakers, a power sunroof, and many more.

In an interview back in July 2023 with Motortrends our 'Iron Man' was asked which one car is his favorite. Downey replied, “Right! My missus got me a 993 Porsche Turbo, which is the last year of the air-cooled 911s… he continued - You're just doing it because of that rear-engine vibe, the sound. Coming down PCH, getting out, you know. You know, there's still so much to be said for the end of that era.” 

18. 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302

Robert Downey Jr. owns the 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302. Built as a high-performance variant of the classic Mustang, the Boss 302 was specifically designed for Trans-Am racing homologation purposes. It featured a robust and aggressive design with a prominent front grille, a distinctive rear spoiler, and bold stripes along the sides. The Boss 302 is one of the most unique cars in RDJ's collection, thanks to the numerous customizations that have been made on it.

At first back in the 2017 SEMA Show, RDJ brought out his customized Mustang Boss which was the perfect blend of retro and modern themes. RDJ commissioned Speedkore to completely revolutionize his Mustang Boss in terms of cosmetic looks and performance. Some of the custom mods that made this car unique are the Detriot Speed aluminum body frame, Quadralink, re-inforced subframes, European leather-inspired upholstery, and Vintage Air-Sure Fit air conditioning system. 

17. 1974 BMW 3.0CS

RDJ owns a 1974 BMW 3.0 CS, part of the BMW "New Six" series, and the car was renowned for its elegant design, impressive performance, and advanced features. The 3.0 CS featured a sleek and aerodynamic body, characterized by its distinctive twin-kidney grille, elongated headlights, and muscular lines that exuded a sense of timeless beauty. The 1974 BMW 3.0CS owned by RDJ has been completely customized by a company named SpeedKore, some of the custom features and amenities that come with the 3.0CS are a predominantly steel body, carbon-fiber accents, coffee-colored leather interior, and many more.

According to Speedkore, their collaboration with Robert Downey Jr has been pretty amazing considering all the vehicles and classic models that the performance group has worked on over the years including European segments. The first car in their European makeover album came with Downey's 1974 BMW 3.0CS which resulted in compiling modern materials with classic European styling unlocking a spirited ride experience even if high in the canyons. 

16. Fisker Karma

The Fisker Karma came in 2012 and was a plug-in hybrid sedan. The car was way ahead of its time and just as you know one of them is in Robert Downey Jr.’s garage. The quirky styling and futuristic specifications of the sedan made sure many Holywood celebrities lined up to have it in their garage. Apart from Robert the second most famous one is Leonardo DiCaprio.

The Fisker Karma apart from the aesthetics offers numerous features and functions such as a solar panel roof, brown suede seats, wood and silver accents, and many more. Being one among 2,400 units, RDJ has not been seen using this one as most of his other vehicles.

15. Acura NSX Concept

The Acura NSX Concept was featured in the Iron Man and Avenger movie series. Honda used the opportunity to build hype for its all-new NSX. After the movie, the Concept car was taken by Robert and now it sits in his garage. That said, the car was simply a prop for the movie as underneath it was based on a 1991 Acura NSX with 252,000 miles on it.

The movie guys got it from the original owner for under $20,000. Then the car was given a new body and some modification was done to make it look like the NSX concept.

Mechanically the car wasn’t changed and under the hood, it still got the original 3.0-liter naturally aspirated V6. Thus to avoid a breakdown in the movie scenes the car was driven under 30 MPH. Now technically the car isn’t worth a lot but since it is featured in the movie and is owned by Robert himself its price is estimated to be around $9 million. The mod was carried out by Trans FX, during which they stripped the vehicle of all its body panels except for the doors.

14. Mercedes-Benz S550

Robert Downey Jr. owns a black color Mercedes-Benz S-Class. His is the 2017 model year S550 whose starting price when new was $97,500. The car is primarily used by Robert to visit nearby places, shopping, and airport runs. Most of the time he is in the back seat but the Iron Ma doesn’t shy away from getting behind the wheels of this stately sedan.

The 2017 Mercees-Benz S550 apart from being a very luxurious car is quite safe as well. The S550 offers numerous standard safety features such as a pre-collision safety system, dual front, and rear side-mounted airbags, front and rear ventilated discs, and many more.

13. Nissan GT-R

For any car enthusiast, a Nissan GT-R always has a special place. Fast and Furious franchise and then Paul Walker are among the few who made the GT-R famous among celebrities. And it’s no surprise that Robert Downey Jr. who is an avid connoisseur of fast cars owns one. He has a silver color GT-R which he is seen driving himself a lot many times. His GT-R is estimated to be worth $115,000.

The Nissan GT-R is a beast and many refer to the car by its nickname ‘Godzilla’. There is a good reason for that, the GT-R packs a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine, aside from that it also boasts a plethora of features and amenities such as leather interior upholstery, adjustable and heated steering wheel, dual-zone AC, and many more.

12. Mercedes-Benz SL550 Convertible

Robert Downey Jr. has a soft spot for topless cars and there is no wonder the Mercedes-Benz SL550 roadster finds a place in his garage. Robert loves to drive in the convertible with his friends and family whenever the weather allows. The SL550 in his garage is finished in white and is estimated to be worth $121,095.

The Mercedes-Benz S550 Convertible is quite a luxurious convertible it has several luxurious amenities and apart from that the S550 comes with numerous standard advanced safety features as well.

11. Audi R8 Coupe & Spyder

Robert Downey Jr.'s love for Audi R8 is not a hidden secret. A part of it is because he is its brand ambassador and his on-screen character drives one. The other part is that the R8 is the best performance coupe in the Iron Man's Audi stable. Thus he owns not one or two but three R8s. Of which two are coupes one from the 2009 model year and the other from 2014. The third R8 he has is a 2017 R8 Spyder finished in red. The coupes are finished in silver and white color respectively.

In the first Iron Man film, RDJ was seen driving his Audi R8 in a movie scene when he was taking a private jet to Afghanistan for a military weapons demonstration. On the other hand, when Iron Man 3 came out, RDJ made a blazing entrance with his wife in the Red R8 Spyder down Hollywood Boulevard by a cadre of cops on bicycles. 

10. Ferrari California T

Of all the cars in Robert Downey Jr.’s collection, his blue color Ferrari California T is his most prized possession. He more than often shares his pictures with the blue color Ferrari on his Instagram page. And has been snapped by paparazzi many times driving through the streets in this roaring Ferrari. 

The California T is a thing of beauty when seen and driven in real life and even RDJ has commented in the past that, “In real life, any Ferrari is more exciting than Tony Stark’s Audi R8.”

The T in its name signifies turbocharged thus the California T gets a 3.9L turbocharged V8 engine that generates a good amount of power and performance, apart from that it boasts numerous features and functions both on the interior and the exterior. That said, knowing the actual price Robert paid for this Ferrari is difficult but estimates suggest the car is worth $198,973.

9. Bentley Continental GT

Now Robert Downey Jr. doesn’t own a Rolls-Royce but he does own a Bentley Continental GT and it's the same thing. His Continental GT was originally finished in black color which he later got wrapped in matte green color. Just like the S-Class, he uses the Continental GT when he wants to be in the passenger seat.

His Continental GT is an older model so it's hard to estimate its price but a new one starts at $202,500. The Continental GT boasts an array of features and functions like heated armrests, completely leather upholstery, and many more. As a matter of fact, the car was not bought by RDJ rather it was a part of his payment for the movie 'Iron Man 3'.

8. Mercedes-Benz Pagoda

Robert Downey Jr. loves both classic cars and convertibles and the Mercedes-Benz (W113) Pagoda sitting in his garage is proof. The Pagoda is a classic Mercedes-Benz SL-Class roadster that was on sale between 1963 and 1971. Robert Downey has kept his in immaculate condition and has not customized it.

As standard, the Pagoda came with a folding roof system, a luxurious interior, and many more. That said, the Pagoda owned by Robert is estimated to be worth $300,000 and is the second most prized possession in his car collection. RDJ was seen quite a few times driving around in this beautiful vintage Merc which explains his commitment to preserving and appreciating this timeless vintage beauty. 

7. Audi e-tron GT concept

The Iron Man's Audi e-tron GT concept estimated to be worth $2.5 million is the most expensive car in Robert Downey Jr.’s collection. The car was unveiled by the star himself at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. Later Audi handed over the keys of the concept car to Robert and that’s how the car came to his garage. 

As a matter of fact, before adding this top-notch EV to his car collection, the GT Concept was even used in the MCU movie 'Avengers: End Game' where Tony Stark was seen driving the car down Avengers HQ before their iconic ‘Time Heist’. 

The e-Tron GT concept was powered by a dual electric motor and thus offered electric AWD as standard. Apart from that the e-Tron GT boasts a carbon roof, a lightweight body, flat floor architecture, an aerodynamic exterior design, and many more.

6. 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 

Robert Downey Jr. owns an iconic American sports car that has become a symbol of automotive excellence - the 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. Produced during the height of the muscle car era, the '65 Stingray is highly regarded for its distinctive styling, powerful performance, and advanced engineering. It features sleek, aerodynamic lines, a long hood, and a muscular rear end, which give it a visually striking and aggressive appearance.

Downey had gone beyond the concept of customization for a gasoline-powered vehicle when he turned his Corvette Stingray into an eco-modded dream car. With the vision to make an eco-friendly car while keeping the heritage and enigma of an American Classic Convertible Chevrolet, our beloved Iron Man electrified his all-original '65 Stingray with the help of Speedkore Performance. Recently on June 11, 2024, RDJ put a post on Instagram stating “We changed the heart of an American Classic, but we left the soul intact”. 

5. 1969 Mercedes Benz 280 SE

'Downey's Dream Cars' features another classic Merc from the late ‘60s which originally belonged to Robert’s mother and later the ‘Iron Man’ actor decided to turn the upside down and make it a part of his eco-friendly car stable. At first, the car had a cream & matte black color combination which later got replaced by a stunning matte green with toppie beige accents giving out a kind of official vibe to it. 

The restoration crew replaced the existing engine and converted it into a bio-diesel run system. Even the interior (Dina Mica) is eco-friendly considering it was made from recycled plastic bottles. After receiving the modified Merce, Downey and his son took the car for a test run where Robert stated, “Wow! Mom would love the way it cruises”. 

4. 1985 Chevrolet El Camino

Sweepstakes is filled with interesting modified cars from Downey's car collection and the next one is a spectacle because of its total conversion from on-road to off-road perks. Downey's Dream Cars feature a modified 1985 Chevrolet El Camino boasting a matte brick color scheme with numerous interesting modifications to it. The car received a modern Chevy 2.7L Turbo 4-cylinder engine while a 3-inch lift and 2-ich lift in the front and rear end is off-road focused due to modified suspension. Robert even issued a statement about the car saying “It is a triumph. The future is a hodgepodge of experiments as all breakthroughs are”.

When Downey received the car for the first time, Robert brought his wife Susan to look at the car where the restomod folks showed off the El Camino's custom roof rack alongside a custom bike rack in bed to house two Rad Runner electric bikes. There are also two miniature solar panels installed on the roof which charge the electric bikes while driving. 

3. 1966 Buick Riviera

One of six in 'Downey's Dream Cars' is the modified 1966 Buick Riviera which took a solid 2,225 hours of modification time and resulted in a $150,000 'Buick Beauty'. First, the original Buick Nailhead engine was replaced by a first-generation LS series hybrid engine resulting in more horsepower and two and a half times better gas mileage. From replacing drum brakes with disc brakes to adding custom wheels and tires, Robert's Buick is a thing of beauty as the actor himself stated “This car's a future version of itself”.

Downey's modified Buick Riviera also boasts “The Puck” which is the first of its kind air quality sensor developed by Aclima. This prototype allows the driver to gather real-time data on air quality anywhere he drives. Also, the parts used in the engine modification were old. 

2. 1972 Chevrolet K10 Pickup Truck

Another electric candidate in Downey's Dream Cars fleet is the 1972 Chevy K10 Pickup Truck. The original engine was removed and in place came a single-motor powertrain. The front hood covers approximately half of the battery pack for the truck and the other half is stationed at the bed in the form of a toolbox giving it a clever aesthetic makeover. 

Rich Benoit and his Electrified Garage Team did a total of 3,725 hours of modification on the truck making it a one-of-a-kind EV Pickup out there. They even took and converted a Tesla drivetrain to work for this classic Chevy Pickup. Downey praised Rich Benoit and his team for their marvelous job saying “These guys took a gas-drinking, carbon-belching dragon of a vehicle and turned it into a stealth weapon capable of superhero feats of strength”.

1. 1972 Volkswagen Bus

Arguably the most underrated modified car in Robert Downey Jr's car collection is the Brazilian-built 1972 VW Bus. Popular DIY YouTuber and EV modifier Jehu Garcia was tasked with the challenge of turning Downey's 1972 VW Beach Bus into an EV spectacle. The folks removed the conventional 1.1L air-cooled engine with EV West electric motor conversion and custom battery rack making it an ideal family beach bus.  

Adding to that, The bus features a custom built-in BBQ grill which is powered by solar energy coming from the solar panels racked above the rooftop. Also, there is an eco-board verified custom Firewire surfboard designed by Rob Machado which has 30% less carbon footprint than conventional surfboards.

Of all the conversions, it's the one that took to it the best.

Special Mention

1967 Camaro RS Speedkore “Steve Rogers” Special Edition

The 1967 Camaro RS Speedkore doesn't exactly belong to Robert but was the brainchild of our beloved 'Tony Stark. Robert bought a 67 Camaro RS, modified it with the help of the folks from Speedkore, and gifted it to his good friend and co-star Chris Evans at the set of the third Avengers movie in Atlanta. 

The car was even featured in Jay Leno's Garage and in a special show on CNBC featuring Jay Leno and our beloved 'Captain America' Chris Evans. In that episode, Jay and Chris unveiled the car to the world and praised the aesthetics, color, restomod design, and even the newly fitted Chevy LS3 750-hp engine.
