• Born in Moolaipozhi village, Tamil Nadu, into a Tamil Hindu family. 
• Studied at Town Higher Secondary School, Kumbakonam, and Elango Corporation Higher Secondary School, Madurai.
• Completed high school education at St. Joseph Boys Higher Secondary School, Trichy.
• Received a pre-university degree from American College, Madurai.
• Earned a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore.
• Started his career at Walchand Group's Cooper Engineering Ltd. in Pune in 1967.
• Co-founded Microcomp, a company that produced calculators, in the early 1970s.
• Established HCL (Hindustan Computers Limited) in 1976 with an initial investment of $2,227 and a vision to create an indigenous IT company in India.

Shiv Nadar’s family has played a significant role in supporting his philanthropic and business ventures.

• His parents were Sivasubramaniya Nadar and Vamasundari Devi. 
• Vamasundari Devi was the sister of S. P. Adithanar, founder of Dina Thanthi newspaper.
• He is married to Kiran Nadar, a prominent art collector and philanthropist.
• They have a daughter, Roshni Nadar Malhotra, who is the chairperson of HCL Technologies.
• Shiv Nadar and Kiran Nadar are active Bridge players and sponsor the famous HCL Bridge Tournament in India.
