Robin Zeng

Robin Zeng is one of the most influential figures in the global energy sector, known for revolutionizing electric mobility through his company, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL). 

As the founder and chairman of CATL, Zeng has positioned the company as the world’s leading supplier of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles, powering models from major automakers including Tesla, BMW, and Volkswagen. His leadership has been instrumental in transforming CATL from a domestic battery producer into a critical player in the worldwide EV transition.

In recent years, Zeng has broadened CATL’s vision beyond battery manufacturing. The company is now actively developing energy storage systems, smart grid solutions, and modular EV platforms, aiming to become a full-scale green energy provider.

• In 2001, he earned a marine engineering degree from Shanghai Jiaotong University, an MSc in electronics and information engineering from South China University of Technology.
• In 2006, he then earned a PhD in physics from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
• Early in his career, Zeng worked at a state-owned shipbuilding company in Fujian Province.
• He later worked in an electronic parts factory for 10 years after graduation.
• His strong academic background in engineering and physics laid the foundation for his pioneering work in lithium-ion battery technology and the electric vehicle (EV) industry.
